You are listening to the Success Club Podcast. Hello and welcome to session 129. This week I am talking to you about Why you need to think about moving your business online.
Hello and welcome to the Success Club Podcast, my name is Kaz Johnson and I am your host today, this is episode 129 and today I am talking about Why you need to think about moving your business online.
This has been a crazy week, as I write this, we are preparing to lockdown due to the Coronavirus. I am classed as a ‘vulnerable’ person, so the government’s advise is for me to self isolate for 12 weeks. Having had pneumonia recently, I certainly did not want to put myself at risk again, and I didn’t want to burden our already overstretched NHS service either.
I am an extroverted introvert and have been working from home online since taking my bricks and mortar business online by offering online courses and qualifications. So for me, there really is no change. The only thing I have found difficult is to buy eggs, as I follow the Ketogenic way of eating and the shops have been completely empty of these things.
So now might be a good time to think about taking your business and moving it to an online version. But before you do, I want you to take some time and do some brainstorming for a moment.
As I write this in March, I am planning to do my review for April and plan my next 90 days, initially, I thought I would be doing something different, but once I settled down and realised, actually for me nothing changes, except I can’t see my poor old mum who is 92 and lives in a care home or visit my children and grandchildren, but for them, we have the technology to keep us connected.
For many years now, I have worked online, blogging, writing courses and books, so my daily routine stays the same.
I initially thought about helping people by giving some of these courses away for free, but looking at the bigger picture I realised we need to keep the economy moving and to do that, we must NOT give away things for free, other than perhaps helping people from being isolated, so for this, I am offering free chats and a virtual coffee meeting.
So let’s talk about some of the things to consider about before moving your business online…
There is no point selling something if there is no need for it. The best way to do some online market research is to use the Google Keyword Planner as it helps you visualise how many people are searching for your business or product idea during any given time period.
An added bonus is that this tool will provide you with various related keywords which can help you generate ideas around which words to use in your:
- Product names
- Blog posts, and
- Website as a whole.
Conducting keyword research will tell you what consumers are searching for all over the world
Once you have an idea of what you are going to sell, you need to think about the place you are going to sell it from, so the next step is to build your own website.
Build Your Own Website
You must build your business on your own land, not on rented land like Facebook.
Start off by creating a blog and show off your expertise. You do not have to start selling immediately but you could consider putting some Adsense adverts on your website or putting up a sales landing page with a waitlist for a course to that you might offer in the future. It is also a good idea that you show your readers from the get-go that you selling things. I have a free course to show you how to create a blog in the VIP Member’s area. It’s free to join
Build your email list
How can you earn money from your website
Ebooks can be sold on your website, check out how to create a PDF ebook here, (session 102) and you could upload it to Amazon as a print on demand book, turn it into an audiobook, sell it on your own website or sell it on Audible. It’s cheap and easy to create a PDF book and create it in a wordprocessor like Word or Pages and save it as a PDF, or create in something like Designrr. These books then can turn into a course.
Courses are how I started my online business. I trained and qualified as an IT trainer, then moved my bricks and mortar business online in 2003 and have never looked back. After a few courses, you could add them all together and create a membership program.
So what else could sell on your online store? Merchandise like t-shirts, mugs, hoodies, totes, laptop skins and mousepads are all things that you could offer as a print on demand service, then sell on your website using an app like Shopify.
You can also sell things like your homemade items like crafts, jewelry or arts the list is endless.
Printables are another go-to item that I sell on my site. Printables are printable prints which are pieces of artwork, drawings, graphic design or pictures that you can download online and print yourself.
Become an affiliate for someone else’s product or service. An affiliate marketer sells other people’s products for them and earns a commission when a person either clicks on a link and or purchases an item, the best one to get started with is Amazon Affiliates program. If you do a review about a particular product, put a link into your post everything you mention it and or put a link at the bottom of your post listed under resources.
Tools to help you in your online business
There are a lot of tools that will help you run your online business and take some of the drudgeries away from some of the routine jobs.
You need to consider how much your time is with worth if you balk at some of the prices of the tools, and once paid for, you are not paying out time and time again. I would recommend looking at putting a system in place from the get-go, because as you grow, you might consider taking on help and would be really beneficial if you had a system in place before you took on your help as it would make onboarding a seamless transition.
I talked about the top tools that I use in my online business here, but do a search for others as I have only listed the top tools that I use.
I want you to think about how you can pivot and make changes in your business and offer things to people that they need as people need normal right now, so they need something else other than coronavirus. How can you offer a service and help people online by doing that very same service? Perhaps you run a consulting business and do it online, either by a Skype call?
Bringing your business online is much easier now than when I started out. There are software packages that help you write books, create courses or sell other peoples products and services as
You need to have some kind of shopping cart so that you can take payments and deliver the goods.
If you create a passive income, ie, selling ebooks, courses or printables, these can be set up to be delivered automatically to the customer whilst taking payment for you at the same time.
Alongside your shopping cart, you will need a payment processor like Stripe or Paypal, they will take your payments and will either deposit the money directly into your bank or you can manually move it when you wish.
It may sound like a lot of things too, but if you break it down into small manageable steps, you can move your business online in no time,
I am offering a planning training session to help you to plan you next 90 days and to help you create your first online product and handhold you as you take your first tentative steps in creating your online business – it’s great value at just £47, so don’t hesitate and delay in creating your online business.
