Hello and welcome to the Success Club Podcast, my name is Kaz Johnson and I am your host today, this is episode 120 and today I am talking about staying focused.
I remember the very first book I read on personal development, and that was ‘The Power of Focus’ by Jack Canfield and I remember a quote that stuck with me ever since and that was, ‘it’s not all hocus pocus, it’s all about staying focused’
It is so easy to get derailed and forget about what we should be doing, even though I meditate each day, my mind wanders over things I need to do today, conversations that happened yesterday, then I remember to bring my focus back to my breathing. If you think about a plane that makes a long journey, the wind will blow it off course many, many times and the pilot has to keep bringing the plane back on track.
So, when you need to keep reminding yourself, whether it’s personal goals or business goals that you will go off track from time to time and you will need to bring yourself back on track so that you are aligned with your goals.
On a Friday, I do a weekly review, this stops me from getting derailed at the start from the get-go. I simply look at what goals I had for the week and ask myself the three main questions, of what went well, what did not go so well, and what you can do better next time. I was taught this when I was studying to be a teacher and think it’s a great practice for me to keep me on track, but when I ask the question ‘what did not go so well’ I also ask myself ‘why?’
For me, it has often been because of illness, so then I realised I need to put my health as the number one push goal, this means I have to put my health first, so when I am at the best my body can be, I see an improvement in sticking to, and reaching my goals, on my quarterly review, I go away for a couple of days, to rest and recharge, then look at my goals and see what is working for me and what I may need to change. It could be a goal I first set out that did not work for me as well as I expected and may need to drop and replace it with another goal. So just because you set a particular goal at the start of the year, doesn’t mean you have to stick to the goal if it is not working for you.
I plan my years yearly, my months monthly, weeks weekly, and my days daily and by having the above system in place I find that I stay focused. It helps me keep my eye on the ball and keeps my number one push goal of putting my health first, which I find hard, at the top of all my goals as, without my health, I have no business.
I thoroughly recommend you get the book ‘The Power Of Focus’ by Jack Canfield if you want to learn how to stay focused, it will teach you about the habits that will determine your future, about consistent persistence, how to overcome setbacks, and above all ‘It’s not hocus-pocus, it’s all about focus’ its a life-changing book that will stop you from multitasking, and we are all guilty of that, me included. This book is not just about business, but about success in general and how to focus your skills into shaping the life/business you thrive for. My book has lost its cover, dog eared and well written in, but it’s my go-to book when I am feeling a little lost.
