This week I am talking to you about creating online courses.
Hello and welcome to episode 44 Of the Kaz Johnson show, my name is Kaz Johnson and I am the blogger behind Kazjohnson.com and the Kaz Academy. The Kaz Academy is the place to be if you are planning, building or growing your online business with online courses and a membership programme. You can learn more about what I do at Kazjohnson.com
Today I am talking about online courses.
I started my online training business in 2010 soon after I was divorced and I had to start from where I was, with what I had, a PC and the internet. I was teaching in a bricks and mortar business, but this had to be sold as we owned the premises and it needed to get sold as part of the divorce settlement.
I started with an online course delivering the Teaching Qualification that I had been delivering in the classroom, so it was something I already new was in demand, but I was not sure how it would be received as an online course. I started with MOODLE, a free open source Learning Management System, and set up a website to market it.
I had only written the first lesson, as I did not want to write the whole course if it was something that people only wanted as a classroom course. Within days I had sold my first online course! Over time I have, through trial and error, perfected the system and it is the model that I use today.
So, why do I like this model of training so much?
Number one, it’s scaleable. I still teach the teachers qualifications, and I am able to reach a much wider audience, and there are no boundaries. People can attend my courses at a time and place thats suits them. Once the course has been written, I only need to keep updating it with new information or from feedback I get from my learners. I do not have to keep being there in person, which as I am so passionate about, drains me. I still train in person, but I do not have to be there morning noon and night, this way I can give so much more to the learners who do attend my live workshops which I only deliver a few times a year now. This means that I can reach more people.
Number two, it’s affordable. Both for me to deliver, as I am not charging by the hour, paying for accommodation, fuel and hire charges, which means that I can pass these cost savings to my learners. Also, once it has been written, I am only having to update it a few times as and when needed. Also the costs of deliver online costs have been reduced so much since I have started.
Number three, it’s an information knowledge age. People are now much more acceptable of online courses from when I first started and they are very happy to buy the information that you have…
