Session 53 – ’Im not an expert! So who will buy my course?

The only thing that is stopping you creating your online course is you… The number one thing I hear is that what is stopping you from creating your online course is… “I’m not an expert! So who will buy my course?” I get it! I felt like that when I first starting selling online courses even though I was qualified to teach, had then over 20 years of teaching experience, I still felt that I was not an expert to teach!!!
Now, to me looking at it from an outsiders perspective, that does not make any sense, however, when you look at in more depth, it just boils down to confidence. Think about it, I was delivering teaching and assessing qualifications, I was qualified and experienced, but still felt I was not what they would call an ‘expert’. So what is an expert anyway? In the English dictionary, an expert is “A person who is very knowledgeable about or skillful in a particular area.” However, if you think about the things you know and are passionate about, you are indeed an expert, you know more about something, for example, knitting, that someone who does not know. Therefore, the person who knows nothing about knitting sees the person who knows how to knit, as an expert, and that person can teach the uneducated how to knit.
So, let’s go back to the question, ‘I’m not an expert! So who will buy my course?’ Anyone who knows nothing about your subject you know and are passionate about will buy your course for the knowledge you have. They will see you as the expert as you know more about your subject than they do.
Why do I mention passion? Because your enthusiasm will shine through, try teaching something you are knowledgeable about but are not passionate about and your learners will soon pick up on this and you will lose them and they will tell others, you want your learners to be ambassadors for you.
Do not let lack of confidence stop you from getting that online course written, you owe it to people to share that knowledge you have that you are passionate about. Like Nike says…. Just do it!
So, grab a pen, and start brainstorming subjects that you are passionate about… put them in order with your most passionate subject at the top… and make a start. Get that website up, and start outlining your course.
